Your True Country Pub

As you pull into Methven Mt Hutt Village and stand at the cross roads of the two main streets (one fittingly named Main Street!) you’ll see two pubs on opposite corners. One of them is Blue, one of them is Brown. Ours is the Brown one.

The catch phrase “your true country pub” is very apt as this is indeed a classic New Zealand country pub. Warm in atmosphere and welcome, you will feel right at home from the minute you walk in the door.

Our Fireside Bar and Family Restaurant has a fabulous menu complete with some delicious new items and the classic favourites we know you love! Our accommodation recently had a facelift including carpet, paint and bedding.

The Brown Pub, finalist in New Zealand’s Best Country Hotel at the 2016 HANZ Awards for Excellence, is located right in the middle of town and offers the Main Bar, the Fireside Bar, a family restaurant,  fresh, clean affordable accommodation, the Methven Liquor Centre and naturally a great time. We are also very proud to be awarded the Lion Breweries Beer Master award for demonstrating excellence in beer quality and presentation – ten years running. So you know the beer is going to be good.

It also helps that we live in New Zealand’s best little country town. Methven is a dynamic mix of generations old farms and up and coming real estate. It’s a lively ski town in the winter bringing with it a huge influx of travellers both international and domestic, who are all up for a good time. In the summer it’s a peaceful place to stop on a sightseeing tour and relax amongst some of the regions most beautiful scenery. Its also home to some of the kindest, most generous people you will ever meet. Methven is still very much a community, we love it here and hope you will too.

Brown Pub Methven

The grass track harness racing season kicks off at our place tomorrow for the annual Clubs of Canterbury race day underneath the stunning Mt Hutt backdrop. As per usual, big and even fields are the order of the day so to help you try and find a winner on one of the toughest punting tracks in the country, we’ve asked the man in the stands to put together a bit of a run through for the day, focussing on those who performed at last weekend’s Mt Hutt trials on the Methven track.

Race 1: Bob Butt lines up his promising maiden trotter in the day’s opener, Gold Chain who looked right on target to go one better than the debut effort for second. If there’s a worry, it’s the one barrier but a safe beginning should see him right in the mix in this even looking trotting event. Others who might be worth including in and around the likely favourite include; Superfast Ninja, Sunrise Spur, Fekitoa and Boyz Invasion - the latter is a first starter for local trainer, Michael Heenan who will be driven by Ricky May.

Race 2: Richard Aubrey lines up a really exciting debutant here in Wainui Creek who looked every bit a horse who could win first up when she dashed up the lane to win a trial last weekend in dazzling fashion. Expecting big things from her today. Kerry O’Reilly has a strong hand in the race with his maiden mare, Sounds Bettor who just doesn’t know how to run a bad race.

Race 3: Simon Adlam has taken over the training of handy maiden, Turkish Trousers who looked very forward when winning strongly last Saturday. Might need that run under her belt to get to full race fitness but a good draw and an positive drive from new Methven committeeman, Gerard O’Reilly should have her right in the fight. Look for big runs from Algranco Albyone, Chatty Man and Tabitha Franco.

Race 4: One that caught the eye, climbing all over his rivals last week was My Mate Ben. Trained by Phil Burrows and with Gavin Smith you would expect he’ll be ready to go a big race on debut. Up against a really even looking field here and that’s plenty of chances. Blazin Creek, Mongolian Spear, Adjudicator and Flyingmasterwilliams, who went very well last week, are all leading hopes.

Race 5: Straight out of last week’s trials, it was hard not to be impressed with the win of Ideal Invasion who showed real toughness to win impressively in the hands of an in-form Jimmy Curtin who drives again today. With good manners, he wouldn’t be the worst. Motu Great Sensation, Rusty I Am and southern raider, Amabede are all serious contenders.

Race 6: Awaytocullect wasn’t at the trials last week, but he has performed very well at Methven in the past and from a good draw and facing a drop down on his recent opposition, he should be running on strongly at the business end. Sounds Lika Gem was one who was here last week and she looked right on song for her resumption.

Race 7: Big even junior drivers race here with a whole heap of chances. The last horse in the book, Copperhead Rose returns here from a spell and he was good running second last week. Will need to plot a path around them all, but capable of winning this. Dundee Lady, The Croupier and Christmas Toyboy all look strong hopes while maiden winner, Itsthefinalcountdown is a big chance of going two for two.

Race 8: Bailey’s Knight returns to the grass tracks here and his credentials for young trainer Jack Harrington and he can be a huge player in the day’s feature event. From the trials last week Shadow Minister was exceptionally good, running strong time and looking to have plenty in reserve. He could be hard to catch. Local Mid Canterbury mare Queen Bee Bardon was too good when winning fresh last start to not be considered.

Race 9: Really strong trotting field here with a whole heap of chances. Red Hot Rocket was good for Gavin Smith last week when finishing second to Ideal Invasion so take a line out of how he performs earlier in the day when sorting this one out. Rachmaninov, Missie Castleton and Breeny’s Cullen are all strong hopes too.

Race 10: We round the day out with another even looking line up. Nancy’s Boy was too good last Saturday to ignore eight days later. Ben Hope sat him off the speed and he ran past his rivals with ease. Huge chance to make it two in a row. Downtown Train was another trial winner last week and could race handy to the speed while Brad Mowbray has a strong hand with Quite Ideal and Gypsy’s Choice.

Hopefully there’s winner or two in there for everyone. Our first race gets underway at 11:30am and we are racing through until 4:30pm - entry as always is free and there will plenty of action both on and off the track for everyone on course. Make sure you check back here for your chance to win courtesy of the club tomorrow morning.

We’re looking forward to having everyone on course for what should be a cracking start to the grass track racing season.
